St. John Sahagun Church, Candon, Ilocos Sur

After the very brief visit to Santa Lucia Church, another short visit ensued, this time to Candon City when Tutubi noticed the plaza and the church to his right with a giant Christmas tree beside it.

The church ceiling and walls are adorned with colorful murals and windows of stained glass. the altar with gold leaf, typical of old stone churches of the Philippines.

Did you know that Candon was named after the kandong? A tree already extinct in the city, much like Manila no longer has the nila tree (you got that right, nila tree, as there's no such thing as nilad tree like most of use were made to believe)

As usual, Tutubi visited the place for only a few minutes, took a few pictures then sped off...

Next stop, a quiet beach in San Esteban town and a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Other possibly interesting places to check out in Candon in the future:
1. Darapidap Beach: probably a gray sand beach
2. Tobacco Festival, every March as thanksgiving for the city's claim as "tobacco capital of the Philippines"
3. Candon Kalamay (or Calamay): stalls selling this Candon delicacy can be found on the road side near the city hall and Candon Church, nice pasalubong stop from the Ilocos too.

For commuters, Candon City can be reached via the following bus lines:
Partas, Dominion Bus Lines, Sta. Lucia Express and Martinez Trans and Candon Bus Line

Directions to Candon, Ilocos Sur:

It's easiest via NLEX and SCTEX then a straight drive on MacArthur Highway to La Union then Ilocos Sur til you reach the city famous for the kalamay. It's quite easy but quite far :(
