Butterfly Farms and Gardens in the Philippines

Tutubi, whose name came the Filipino word for dragonfly, is actually fond of butterflies, the most beautiful and colorful members of the insect world. Though still not equipped for it for it needs expensive telephoto lenses, he intends to pursue butterfly watching as a hobby besides travel and photography someday.

The Philippines is endowed with so many species of the six-legged creatures with colorful wings and a few days lifespan, some species probably yet to be discovered and documented.

The butterfly garden list below "spidered" from their official websites, and needs to be updated from time to time. These butterfly farms, besides being educational destinations for field trips, also double as suppliers of live butterfly release during weddings, and other events.

On butterfly releases, probably due to ignorance of most people, the released butterflies have very slim chance of surviving and multiplying in the area where they're released due to the absence of the host plants to lay their eggs on and their caterpillars need to survive. This is the way nature designed it, a butterfly species needs a specific partner plant (called host plant) to survive in this world, take away the host plant, you kill the butterfly (or drive them to extinction). That's why the presence of butterflies in an area is a sign of good ecological health of the place besides acting as an indicator of how clean the air is for they're also very sensitive to changes in the environment.

  1. Wow, this is cool, will try to visit a few of these gardens soon..I wonder if there are gardens for dragonflys. i love dragonflys you know. i used to catch them in the grasses and put some string in the tail with a small colored paper

  2. I even think a lot of those butterflies are exported abroad.

  3. dennis, afaik no gardens for dragonflies unless you make one. dragonflies live near swamps, ponds and watery areas and spend much of their lifetime as nymphs living underwater before developing their wings and becoming full-grown dragonflies

sidney, yes. some of them export live butterflies. Recommend against live releases though for introducing new species may do more harm than good...

  7. this is a very intensive research on butterfly farms in the Phils. nice, nice. Been in rainforest park Pasig couple of times but didn't notice the butterfly garden there....or maybe I was not looking.hehe

  8. I tried to take photos of butterflies, but unfortunately none of my shots have passed my "strict" standards :D. I guess I should practice some more.

I do love going to butterfly habitats too.

  11. I like butterflies pero I don't have the guts to go near them simply b/c I'm afraid I might accidentally hurt them. It's silly but yeah. Heh.

  12. wow, you have a comprehensive list here! i've been to the island cove butterfly garden. mahirap sila kunan ng pic. hehe.

    ReplyDelete
  13. diba mabilis sila mamatay?

sa dami ng nilista mo, yung sa subic at palawan lang napuntahan ko.

meron din sa aklan sa... villa sampaguita ba yon? basta yon.. hehehe. pero super small lang yon :)

  14. salingPusa, note that using a DSLR at pasig park requires a permit, however stupid that is. administrators still think only pros have what guards call "big cameras"

photo cache, it requires long lenses and patience. i need to buy a new lens to pursue it :(

r-yo, wala kasi butts sa japan? or konti lang?

travelphilippines, so beautiful, right? and the myth that butterflies cause blindness when touched is silly. I prefer the myth to stay for people to just marvel at them instead of catching them

kyels, just take their pictures :P

Mitz mahirap kunan ng point and shoot yun dapat malayo ka or anticipate them to land on a flower

tin-tin, yes, ilang araw lang lifespan nila

  15. I've been to Grand Villa Resort and Butterfly Farm in Bay, Laguna and the place is really lovely. The butterfly garden is not that big but cosy and relaxing. Aside from the farm you can tour the whole place on their jeepney, see the animals in their small zoo, play paintball with your family or colleagues and just enjoy swimming on their large pools. They also have cute nipa huts if you want to stay overnight.

  17. sir ask ko lang po pag commute from alabang ano po sasakyan papauntang grand villa resort and butterfly farm in laguna?we're planning to go there this coming holy week..thanks in advance!

    ReplyDelete
  18. kyle, from Alabang to Bay, board a bus going to Sta. Cruz, non-aircon via HM Transit (aircon buses to Sta Cruz of HM Transport and Green Star don't pass by Alabang ilalim) then drop off in Bay town center. In Bay, hire a tricycle to take you there or ask around. An alternative is to board buses to Calamba, then transfer to a jeepney going to Sta. Cruz then request the driver/conductor to drop you off in Bay.

  23. Butterfly Kingdom inside the Paradise Ranch (an NGO inside Clark, Pampanga) is the biggest butterfly garden in the entire Philippines. It comes with many species this NGO cultivates and imports from other farms, a man made vulcano with very attractive Koi fish. In addition to theButterfly Kingdom there is a resort, bird, reptile and other wildlife conservation inside and a seperate Zoo in the facility. Villas, dorms and campasite are also available. The park is promoting environmental conservation and its "work for food or school program" by providing jobs to individuals who wants to help themselves. You will not only enjoy this 35 hectare facility becasue of its beauty and humble mission but the VIEW overlooking the Clark area and the mountains is way too cool para kang nasa Tagaytay....

  25. the one in Palawan is already closed. The newly renovated one and is running for almost 13years now is THE PALAWAN BUTTERFLY GARDEN they don't advertise. news only travel trough word of mouth. they have other insects too and are going to put up an insect museum. it is owned by a family of butterfly specialists for two generations. Each province has their own species of butterflies so it's nice to butterfly garden hop and compare!
