Boracay Kitesurfing, Kiteboarding and Windsurfing Rates in Bulabog Beach

Ask many Filipinos a place they've been to or wanting to go to and most likely it'll be Boracay. Ask people who've been to Boracay if they've visited Bulabog Beach and majority will say-- nay!

Tutubi's trip to Boracay is actually his first but imagine the amazement of Tutubi's companions who've been to Boracay for 2 or 3 times and yet were astonished at the sight of the "secret" beach Tutubi took them with colorful sails and kites flying from a distance, waves lapping at the white sand beach, and strong winds.

Not as popular as Boracay's four kilometer long White Beach is the so-called backpacker beach of Bulabog, incidentally also home to Asia's finest site for wind activities like kitesurfing, kiteboarding and windsurfing. It rivals Vietnam's Mui Ne Bay as a kitesurfing mecca of Asia due to it's wind powered by lady Amihan (northwest monsoon).

bulabog beach boracaypicture of Bulabog beach (sometimes mispelled as Bolabog) with kites and surfs, too bad, the picture has less kick due to cloudy skies

boracay kitesurfing rates picture of a sign showing the rates of learning kitesurfing, how much does it cost? No such thing as cheap kitesurfing classes; no idea on DIY gear though. Notice also the Introductory course fee at Pinas kiteboarding

While there, Tutubi was able to spot signs in Russian plus foreigners moslty Europeans: Germans, French, Russian, Italians, British and some Americans living on Boracay Island.

It's said that Boracay was "discovered" by backpackers years ago who "leaked " pictures of the place to the world. Bulabog beach remains a backpacker beach with budget resorts lined up on the beach front.

    ---

    Notes:
There are many Bulabog Beach resorts for those on a budget, unlike the touristy resorts of White Beach.

    IKO = International Kiteboarding Organization

How to get to Bulabog Beach:

Bolabog is a short tricycle ride from Boracay's main White Beach, you can get out to the main road from D'Mall or D'Talipapa and take a trike from there for about 15 minutes, fare is about P60 (depends on your negotiation skills, more if you're a foreigner :). If you feel like it, you can also walk/trek to the place with the access road near Pink Patio and Metrobank (ask around, it's ok)

    Holy Week in Paete, Laguna

Tutubi spent his Holy Week break not on the crowded beaches or some secluded place but in his hometown, Paete in Laguna. He reached home by braving a 4.5 hour drive with heavy traffic typical of long weekends and holidays.

A Guide to Holy Week in Paete (for those wishing to witness it next year)

Palm Sunday/Linggo ng Palaspas/Domingo de Ramos

palms are carried to church particularly the palaspas (made from nipa fronds) to celebrate the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem mounted on a donkey.

    Holy Wednesday in Paete:

A unique ritual of bathing the mahal na Senor (as what the dead Christ is called) is performed at the home of the owners here.

A popular holy week destination for Metro Manilans, Paete town in Laguna boasts of a traditional life-size images on processions starting on Holy Wednesday where the unique moving saints of Paete re-enact biblical events called salubong at three places in town: at the public market, Plaza Edesan and ending at the town plaza.

The salubong at the palengke (market) is about Mary wiping the blood and sweat of Jesus carrying the cross with operatic voices on the background. The next scene at Plaza Edesan involve Veronica wiping the face of Jesus while the last scene at the town plaza shows the moving Veronica showing her towel's imprinted with Jesus' three faces and Mary's showing her own towel with facial markings. Procession starts after mass at Paete Catholic Church around 6pm.

    Maundy Thursday:

A cenaculo (passion of Christ) is staged at the town plaza in the afternoon while many people come to visit the old baroque church famous for it's intricate facade, four large murals and the retablo (tableau) laced with gold leaf part of the Laguna Visita Iglesia

At 6pm, another procession will start, this time by IFI (Iglesia Filipina Independiente) popularly known as Aglipayan or simply Aglipay, with their own life-sized images and salubong. Note the santos are lined up for viewing on Quesada St. (Paete's Main road cutting across the town plaza) and photo opportunity.

It's during this time that people begin to trek to Paete's Tatlong Krus (Three Crosses) to camp there overnight (it's a big, crowded camp site on Good Friday)

    Good Friday:

You may visit the home of the owner of the Señor (santo entierro) for a unique ritual of bathing the image. (for photos, please see Sidney's take of the rite here)

a view of Paete Church's intricate facade and baroque features
on Good Friday, the bells are silent while bamboo clappers and iron bars attached to wooden boards (called Matraka), make noise before the dead Christ

the Mater Dolorosa, the last image of the procession, is actually the exact replica of an image Mariano Madriñan made and received a gold medal during Amsterdam International Exposition of 1883 (note that a gold medal in expositions does not equate to a "first place" finish)

The various carriages with santos start to assemble inside the church. Those who joined the Wednesday procession got new wardrobes and flowers. The Seven Last Words are recited until 3pm when Dapit starts, the body of the dead Christ is brought to church.

Procession will start at 5pm with both Catholics and Aglipayan taking different routes. The procession route will snake its way to pass by the homes of owners of santos who joined the procession of Holy Wednesday where the images are displayed.

You'll notice the Tatlong Krus on Humarap (the hill overlooking Paete, part of Sierra Madre) are lighted with people visible if you have a telescope, binoculars or a telephoto lens.

    Black Saturday/Sabado de Gloria

a traditional Easter Eve Ball is held at the grounds of Paete Elementary School (Central) while waiting for the Salubong of Easter Sunday

    Easter Sunday:

The Salubong with a re-enactment of the resurrected Jesus' meeting with his disciples starting with Mary Magdalene at dawn that includes a procession early in the morning.

    ---

Other Holy Week Events in the Philippines:

If you're looking for macabre and much hyped about crucifixions, you may try to view the bloody event in San Pedro Cutud, San Fernando, Pampanga where people volunteer themselves to be crucified under the searing heat of the summer sun for decades now.

Another event of Easter Sunday crucifixion is the so called Taltal (meaning: to remove) in Barotac Viejo, Iloilo,

Other unique celebration on Easter Sunday are the so called Sugat (Cebuano word for meeting) dawn plays in Minglanilla and Argao towns of Cebu.

The best place to be in Holy Week, for some, is just to stay at home. Imagine Metro Manila without the crowds, malls closed but Manila Ocean Park is open.

    Holy Week Trivia:

Did you know why the date of Holy Week is not fixed? Holy Week, particularly Easter Sunday is reckoned from the full moon on or after the Vernal Equinox (equinox means the length of day and night are equal)

ABS-CBN Umagang Kay Ganda in Boracay

Day 2 of Tutubi's Boracay with a blast, ABS-CBN's early morning show Umagang Kay Ganda was present in Boracay with live telecast in front of La Carmela de Boracay at Station 2. This confirmed the news that they've a shoot there when Rica Peralejo was with Tutubi from Caticlan Airport on her way to La Carmela de Boracay

Cebu Pacific Flights to Caticlan Airport(Boracay)

Cebu Pacific's new direct flights from Manila to Caticlan and Cebu to Caticlan is now live. From Caticlan, the world famous beaches of Boracay is just a short boat ride away.

Last December, Tutubi availed of the famous Piso Fare of Cebu Pacific to get low cost, short travel time to Boracay Island. He came to explore Boracay Island's hidden wonders the usual visitors of the Philippines' most famous tourist destination don't get to see.

Picture of ATR 72-500 plane on disembarkation

baggage loading of ATR 72-500 turboprop airplane

The spanking new ATR 72-500 aircraft still smelled like it has just been taken out of the factory. Arranged with 19 rows and 4 columns, passengers were made to occupy front, middle and back rows to stabilize the aircraft. Stabilization also includes weighing of passengers with their carry-on baggage (this is similar to Tutubi's SeaAir flight to Busuanga in 2004). Passengers were requested to deplane by rows starting at the back rows, still, for plane stabilization purpose.

The best part of the flight, Tutubi's favorite, were the in-flight games where the cabin crew asked trivia questions from passengers and gave away nice shoe bags courtesy of Sun Cellular. It's unprecedented that Tutubi was able to win two shoe bags; one for each flight of his round-trip ticket!

This will be the first of a series of the wandering Tutubi's Budget Boracay with a Blast and also the first field assignment of his new Nikon D80 camera with Nikon 18-200 VR lens :P

Nuestra Señora del Pilar and Fort Pilar Museum

With his limited time to explore Asia's Latin City i.e. Zamboanga City, Tutubi set out to visit interesting places the city has to offer. He was able to reach Fort Pilar by walking from Universidad de Zamboanga, past City Hall and Lantaka Hotel to the old stone fort.

the stone walls of Fort Pilar: Manila has Fort Santiago, Cebu and Iloilo both have Fort San Pedro, Cavite City has Fort San Felipe, Romblon with Fort San Andres, Zamboanga City's Fort Pilar as fortification.
inside the stone fort with the old military barracks in view. The place is now a popular events venue for weddings and other cultural occasions.
Entrance of Fort Pilar Museum with colorful sails of the famous Zamboanga vinta

The fort was built in 1635, then known as "Real Fuerza de San Jose" later renamed "Real Fuerza de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza", in response to raids by the Sultans of Mindanao and Jolo, and is now simply called Fort Pilar. It survived Dutch bombardment in 1646 and the British in 1798

History of Fort Pilar written on the NHI marker

Fort Pilar is now a museum (alternating as a venue for weddings, art exhibits, and other events). The museum galleries has on display of the Griffin, a ship that sank off Mindanao in the 18th century (similar to the San Diego galleon's artifacts displayed at the National Museum in Manila), and ethnographic and marine biology exhibit. (No picture taking is allowed inside like most museums' policy without a proper permit. Entrance to the museum, however, is free)

The exterior of the Fort is a shrine to the Nuestra Señora del Pilar (Our Lady of the Pillar), the patroness of Zamboanga (and also of Santa Cruz, Manila, the Diocese of Imus) with fiesta celebrated on October 12.

Image of Our Lady of the Pillar outside Fort Pilar and is a popular Catholic Pilgrimage site in Mindanao

Our Lady of the Pillar, another of the numerous titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary, according to ancient tradition, narrates that in the year 40 in Zaragoza, Spain, Mary appeared to James the Greater on the Ebro River while St. James the Great was preaching. She appeared on a pillar, and the pillar is preserved and venerated within the present Basilica of Nuestra Señora Del Pilar in Zaragoza, Spain. Thus the image is called "La Virgen de Nuestra Señora del Pilar de Zaragoza (Our Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza).

Fort Pilar Museum Entrance Fee: None

    How to get there:

Fort Pilar is walking distance from Zamboanga City Hall, Rizal Park and Zamboanga University. You may hire a tricycle if you don't feel like walking.

Vote for Tubbataha Reef for the New 7 Wonders of Nature

A favorite of the moneyed SCUBA divers in the Philippines, Tubbataha reef has been nominated in the ongoing selection of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

This is a call to all Filipinos or anyone to vote for Tubbataha to be included in the list where the reef is currently struggling at the 30th place.

Please see this link for the live ranking. You can see the Vietnamese and Bangladeshis/Indians doing the same thing that's why their entries are currently on top.

Tubbataha's page on the site is available here

    Note:

Tutubi thinks limiting the list to seven still is unfit in these modern times. The old seven wonders of the world, whose only surviving member are the Great Pyramids of Egypt, were selected by ancient men using their understanding of the world known to them and therefore did not include wonders beyond their known world. Seven then was easy, selecting seven now is not!

    Tubbataha 101:

Politically part of Cagayancillo, Palawan, Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park, or simply Tubbataha, is reputedly the Philippines' best dive spot. It was named by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in 1994 due to the reef's amazing marine biodiversity where you'll find a good variety of invertebrates, reef fishes, soft corals, close encounters with the Tubbataha shark, tip sharks, nurse sharks, turtles, manta rays, hundreds of fish schools, reef rays, and other dazzling marine species. It's composed of two main islands: Tubbataha Island and Bird Island.

    Tubbataha Diving and Travel Information:

Best Time to Dive in Tubbataha: end of March to June (only by liveaboard boats)

The recommended way to dive in Tubbataha is to avail of dive packages from various dive resorts in Puerto Princesa. You may contact resorts listed at Tubbataha Reefs dot org to avail of the best and cheapest dive package.

How to get to Tubbataha, Palawan:

The best way to get there is via Puerto Princesa City served by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines, and SEAAir. Flight time is around one hour.

Flight from Seoul, Korea to Puerto Princesa serviced by Philippine Airlines

Manila to Puerto Princesa via Ferry: WG&A Superferry and Negros Navigation has weekly ferry schedules to Palawan. Visit their website for details. Trip takes about 22 hours.

the ever loyal guard dog at the boat bow

the basic bahay kubo accomodation on the small island owned by the Anonuevo family (Tutubi even offered to buy the property if it's for sale...but that's just a joke). You may also pitch tents for camping fun

Kids playing on the beach...watch out children, folks here still think water of the lake sucks people forunknown reasons...mainly superstition still persisting!

    Caliraya Lake's fun, isn't it?

The best thing about this trip was that it's free, just a sidetrip offered by the jeepney owner after visiting Paete's Tatlong Krus (Three Crosses) :P
