Jose Rizal Founded La Liga Filipina

This day in 1892, Jose Rizal, after coming back to the Philippines from Hong Kong founded La Liga Filipina in a house on Ilaya (Ylaya) in Tondo. Present in the meeting was Andres Bonifacio who became one of its founders.

La Liga Filipina was organized to be a civic society, to help people in need, foster unity and other noble aims.

But the Spanish authorities, ever wary, feared the organization was dangerous and on July 6, 1892 had Rizal arrested and exiled in Dapitan.

With Rizal in exile, the Liga became inactive after a while and later abolished; the Liga then split into two: the Cuerpo de Compromisarios (who continued to support La Solidaridad) and the radicals, led by Andres Bonifacio, who formed the secret society known as the Katipunan.
